What new electronic devices should students bring to class this year? Are institutions ready?

Students have used electronic devices in the classroom as part of their learning tools for years now and educators have adapted their in-class instruction accordingly. Students have used their devices to collaborate with their teams on assignments, communicate with their instructors, and communicate with administration. Their instructors are able to share detailed learning plans through a multitude of platforms and students have had access to updates at their fingertips.
March 2020 propelled the use of IT to a new level. Students, faculty, administration and IT departments at colleges and universities have had to purchase new devices, and adopt new ways of communicating, learning and delivering post-secondary education. Many students have not only purchased more sophisticated electronic devices but they have also implemented the use of more than one device, often used simultaneously, to attend class and communicate with faculty. This change has certainly taxed WiFi demands at home, and at the same time, it has added pressure on institutions to constantly improve their IT infrastructure.
As the 2022 semesters roll in, what devices would be best for students to navigate smoothly between remote classes and face-to-face classes? In parallel, is there a need for institutions to also ponder and re-evaluate their IT infrastructure, seeking one that is nimble and flexible to changes? What ICT plan do institutions have in place to ensure seamless access to electronic information for students and what is cost efficient within the financial and budget structure of institutions? These questions will be on the minds of many administrators.
